FORMER Newcastle Brough Park runner Ruth's Baby is making a name for himself at Gretna.

The three-year-old, owned and trained by Dave and Ruth Crosbie of Wamphray, near Moffat, secured his second successive victory at Halcrow Stadium at the weekend.

He took the honours as 5/2 shot in an eventful 470 metres race.

The black dog led at the start before slipping behind, then making full use of an opportunist gap after some trouble and pulling away to win by an impressive 5.25 lengths.

Next home was Brian Carson’s two-year-old Ayrshire-based bitch Bellfield.

In his outing the previous week, Ruth’s Baby won comfortably over the 280 metres distance by 2.75 lengths.

The speedy transition from rules to independent racing surprised his owners.

“It came as a shock to me just how well he’s done,” said Dave Crosbie, who keeps his ex-racers at home as pets.

“He’s a nice big dog and we’d rested him after retiring him from rules racing. He’s had a few runs at Gretna and his progress has been remarkable. He has one sprint victory and now one over the middle distance, which was his normal trip.”

Another highlight on Friday night saw Dexter Clark’s three-year-old Kirkbride dog Magnet triumph by two lengths over Cumbrian rival Unlock, a four-year-old dog from Maurice Lawman of Workington.

Meanwhile, Gretna racing director Craig Norman tells me there are still vacancies for the Gretna 100 metres Summer Dash on Friday August 12.

The competition for 18 dogs has a £10 entry with the winner receiving £200 and runner-up £50. Heats and final will be run on the same evening.
