Game called off

HUNDREDS of supporters were left disappointed and frustrated when referee Steven Reid called off the match between Morton and Queen of the South on Saturday— just over an hour before kick-off.

There had been rain and the pitch looked heavy as officials went out and trod the turf trying the bounce of the ball before making the decision.

Queens boss Alan Johnstone said: “I am old school and played in all sorts of conditions and if there had been any doubt at all we should have been told earlier because we had fans travelling from Dumfries.” Even the home officials were surprised at the call-off and Morton manager David Hopkin said there was only one area of concern near the main stand and he felt the game was playable and he also stressed: “The timing was not good enough and there were people travelling from Queen of the South — we were in early and everything was fine.”

The match is now expected to be re-scheduled for the New Year.
