Footy friends set up own team

A GROUP of friends from towns on both sides of the border have formed a new football team that they hope will compete in the Carlisle Sunday League next season.

Border Towns United was founded earlier this year by Nathan Doyle, Gareth Hughes, James Brown and Dylan Irving. They all live in towns in and around the border, including Gretna, Newcastleton and Carlisle. A lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes in recent months, including meetings with the league committee, finding sponsors and a suitable venue to play.

Manager Nathan said: “It’s all coming together, we are 99 per cent there with the league.

“We’ve got a good group of lads and are always looking for more to join.

“We have the kits made and have been sponsored by Get Plastered, we are still looking for a venue for after match food and drinks.”

Going forward the team will play home matches in Gretna at Graitney playing field. Friendlies so far have been arranged against Ambleside, Dumfries Athletic and AFC Gretna.

Anyone interested in joining or sponsoring the team can message their Facebook or Twitter page.
