Food project expands to seven days

SURPLUS supermarket food is being handed out daily at one Dumfries church.

The River of Life Church, near the station, is running their surplus food project, in association with Aldi, every day from 6-6.30 pm.

Pastor Mark Smith said: “Our surplus food project is even more important during the coronavirus crisis. The Government is encouraging food banks and help for people in need to continue under the lockdown, so we’re now running seven days a week. Anyone can come and receive free food if they need it.”

He warned supplies vary from day to day, depending on what short-dated items the stores are giving out. And he noted they are enforcing strict two metre distancing rules and asking people to respect that.

Mark added: “We’re also looking for a few new volunteers to strengthen our team in this demanding time, when some existing team members have having to self-isolate due to vulnerability. Simple training will be provided. “If you’re interested, please message us or call 07710 111727.”
