Food gets to those in need

A MULTICULTURAL group in Dumfries is ensuring food gets to those in need during the lockdown.

Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association (DGMA) members are distributing unwanted food from supermarkets across the area to individuals and families locally. It’s an extension of the ‘Fighting hunger and tackle food waste’ campaign, which DGMA joined back in 2017 and they have volunteers working in Dumfries, Annan, Lockerbie and many other places.

DGMA business manager Yen Hong Mei Jin, pictured, said: “Our aim is to prevent food waste and encourage as many people as possible to get involved by taking what they need. This scheme is open to everyone, especially as we are in this together during these very challenging times.

“We know many people are struggling with their current employment status and may be waiting for Universal Credit to come through or may have children at home and going through more food than they normally would.”

Before the pandemic struck DGMA were providing 40 to 80 parcels a week but this has now doubled to a minimum of 160, with some weeks seeing them deliver up to 200 parcels across the region.Yen said: “People are very grateful for what we are doing and this is lifting the spirits of me and our volunteers.”

To celebrate the work they are managing to do, they have produced a video on social media. Yen added: “Tesco has been really supportive of the Multicultural Association and have even provided us with reusable bags for the food to be delivered. “Morrisons have also been very supportive too during these times by donating us trolleys full of essential items and it is all quality stuff too which is fantastic.”

The work of DGMA has been recognised by Dumfries and Galloway Council, who have allocated them £10,000 to continue to provide their crucial service, while Cash For Kids granted £3000 as well.
