First tower sections arrive at windfarm

THE first turbine tower sections for Sanquhar II Wind Farm have now been successfully delivered to site, marking a major milestone in the construction of one of the UK’s largest onshore wind projects.

The components completed their journey from King George V Docks in Glasgow, where they were received and prepared for onward transportation to Dumfries and Galloway. Their safe arrival signals the transition of the project into its next phase, as construction activity accelerates.

Sanquhar II will be the fourth-largest onshore windfarm in the UK, comprising 44 turbines. The project will utilise Vestas’ Enventus platform, featuring the V162 turbine with a power rating of up to 6.2MW, the first of its kind to be installed in Scotland.

CWP managing director Rod Wood said: “This is an extremely exciting step forward for this project. Onshore wind projects, like Sanquhar II generating electricity for 335,000 homes, help protect the UK from the vulnerability of global gas price spikes which we are seeing with the doubling of gas costs.

"Sanquhar II represents an investment of approximately £400 million into the UK economy.

In addition to creating jobs during construction and operation, the project will contribute significant annual funding through local authority rates, taxes and community benefit initiatives."

Further turbine component deliveries are expected to continue over the coming weeks as construction progresses.
