Farms to open up this weekend
TWO farms in the region are taking part in the Open Farm Sunday event. Meikle Richorn at Kippford and Ernespie at Castle Douglas will be opening up to the public for free tomorrow, Sunday June 8. At Meikle Richorn, which is a unit housing dairy young stock and arable crops, the owners are making a lot of changes to utilise the land which includes areas of woodland, estuary and salt marsh. They hope visitors will explore the unique landscape as well as understand a little bit more about what happens on the farm. There will be a mapped out walk around the fields as well as a tractor trailer to take visitors to various spots. There will be stalls and activities in the farm buildings for everyone to interact with and teas, coffees and ice creams available.
In addition, some of the local 4x4 club will be demonstrating their skills on the steep rocky terrain.
Meanwhile at Ernespie, a working dairy farm with 300 cows and a fully robotic system, visitors can meet the herd of pedigree holstein cows, learn how milk is produced and enjoy a fun day out for the whole family. There will also be tractor and trailer tours as well as a charity BBQ, and a Gelato Hut where you can enjoy artisan, small-batch gelato all made on the farm.
