A FARMING family are appealing a decision to refuse them planning permission for a residential caravan at Carrutherstown The Wrights want to site a caravan on an area of hardstanding at Fostermeadow, so the ‘next generation’ of the family can take over the business. But their initial bid was turned down by planners. Now they are appealing the case and a review will take place next week. In their statement for councillors, the family argue that ‘fair consideration’ was not given to the circumstances surrounding their application, nor was there any discussion or questions asked of them. They point out the farm extends to about 200 acres and carries out contract heifer rearing, sheep wintering, hay production, horse livery and school/breaking horses too. There are no staff outwith the family and Margaret Wright, 33, operates the equestrian business. She states she needs to be on site at all times for dealing with matters arising, as well as security amd bio security. The Wright’s appeal statement submitted to the council further states: “The health and welfare of the animals in their care is vital, hence the need for the caravan. “This business is not in a position to apply for a house but a caravan would afford the opportunity for the next generation to take over the farm.” The issue will be discussed at a meeting of the Local Review Body in Dumfries on Thursday.
