LEARNER drivers in Dumfriesshire waited approximately 8.1 weeks on average for a driving test last year, according to a new report.

But that was lower than the country’s average.

A Freedom of Information Request found that the UK average wait time for a driving test reached over 13 weeks in 2025.

The figures show delays and growing regional differences across Britain, which involved 321 comparable standard car test centres across the UK excluding LGV only centres.

A spokesperson from Evans Halshaw, who made the request, said: “It is encouraging that a few centres offer significantly shorter wait times, but the improvements appear to remain the exception rather than the rule.

“More needs to be done to increase the availability of driving test examiners and their scheduling arrangements, to hopefully sort this growing nationwide backlog.”

The UK Government has said new measures are in place to tackle long waiting times for tests, including recruiting 450 driving examiners and increasing notice periods for cancellations.
