Dumfries defeated despite Cubbon century

DUMFRIES 1st XI lost at home to Langside in the Western Premiership 2.

Langside put the home side into bat and that paid dividends as the Dumfries batting line-up struggled.

So much so that Dumfries were in the parlous state of 81 for eight with opening bowler Gul claiming five wickets.

At that stage opener Munro Cubbon was holding the innings together, having reached 50.

It then required a probable first team record ninth wicket partnership of 102 between Munro and Chris Brockwell to achieve a creditable total. Munro reached his second century this season for the first team and was out, caught for an excellent 102, which earned him the Barbours Player of the Match Award.

Brockwell finished on 51 not out as Dumfries reached 196 all out, but were left contemplating the 11 overs still left to be bowled.

Dumfries managed to make regular inroads into the Langside batting order with Alan Davidson removing three of the top four cheaply.

However, opener Mujahid Khan remained and was to be 54 not out and Asad Khan contributed a rapid 40.

Brockwell took a further two wickets to help achieve seven wickets down for 172 to make for tense closing overs.

However, Langside got home for the loss of those seven wickets and Dumfries were left ruing not enough runs and too many extras.

In Western Championship 2, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm held on to top spot after an exciting last over win at Langside 2nds.

Langside opted to bat first and set a challenging total of 229 for 6 in the 40 overs.

Ross Lamb took two wickets and Cory Dawson, Lachlan Osmond and Sultan Kamran took one each.

Opening bowler Finley Trigg also successfully bowled an economical eight overs for 17 for his one wicket and was the Happy Faces Nursery Player of the Match.

Opener Patrick Obank then set up the Nunholm chase with his 52, Wahid Jabarkhil provided impetus with a crucial score of 45.

Skipper Drew Dawson then managed an increased required run-rate scoring 39 not out, including hitting the winning six with four balls left for a very close four-wicket win.

On Sunday, Dumfries U16s were defeated in their U16 Scottish Cup quarter-final game against visitors Clydesdale. Dumfries scored 103 for eight, with Finley Trigg (29) and Lachlan Osmond (25) the top scorers.

In reply, Cory Dawson and Dashiel Trigg took the two wickets to fall as Dumfries bowled well but without mishits going to hand.

And a young Dumfries U11s side also competed well in their Cumbria Cup semi-final loss against Cockermouth at the finals day at Workington.

Dumfries club players were travelling this week for their representative age-group matches for Scotland.

Munro Cubbon had scores of 72, 41 and 79 for Scotland U18s against Cheshire and Northumberland.

Nairn Cubbon top scored with 64 off 50 balls for Scotland U19s against a touring Australian side.

Macey Corbett-Byers toured with Scotland Emerging Girls against Northumberland with wickets and late order runs.

On Saturday, in Western Premiership Two, the Dumfries first team, third placed Vigilant Dumfries with seven wins, play eighth placed Mearns at home.

In Western Championship Two, Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, who sit in top spot after nine wins, play at seventh placed Hamilton Crescent.
