Defib numbers on th rise in region

ACCESS to defibrillators in Dumfries and Galloway has increased greatly in the past few years.

A new report has found that there are 22 potentially lifesaving devices per 10,000 people in the region.

This is an increase of 94 per cent in just a couple of years.

Defibshop’s annual Cardiac Coverage Report has analysed defibrillator distribution across local authority areas in Scotland, England and Wales, evaluating availability per 10,000 people from 2021/22 to 2024.

In that time, it found a notable rise across all of Scotland’s regions.

Defibshop’s Kerry Fairhurst said: “Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests continue to take the lives of most people who suffer one.

“The growth in registered defibrillators on The Circuit (National Defibrillator Network) over the last two years has been significant, allowing an increased chance of survival to many more individuals.

“It is vital that this trend continues and guardians ensure their unit is ready in the event of an emergency and their status is communicated with The Circuit.”
