Darren and Steven get ready for midnight trek

TWO Dumfries friends are preparing to undertake a midnight trek up the highest mountain in Scotland in aid of a charity close to their hearts.

Best buds Darren Kirkpatrick, 38, and Steven Harkness, 39, are taking on Ben Nevis in the early hours of Saturday morning to raise money and awareness of motor neurone disease (MND).

Darren’s mum Fiona died six years ago this November from the illness. The pair have been climbing several hills over the last year in preparation for the big event which is to raise money for MND Scotland.

Darren said: “Steven and myself have done a lot of hills in the region. We started training in February 2020 as the trek was originally due to take place that June but was postponed due to covid.

“MND Scotland pick the challenges and this one appealed to us both and gave us a challenge and something to focus on.”

So far the duo have raised just over £1000 and they are delighted with the support shown by the local community.

Darren added: “Most people have donated through the JustGiving page which has been amazing.

“We really appreciate everyone’s support and generosity, especially since a lot of people have been out of work or on furlough due to the pandemic.”
