Council land trio to be sold off

SCOTTISH Power is set to snap up three pieces of land owned by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The three spots – two in Dumfries and one in Kirkcudbright – have been declared surplus to requirements by council officers.

They are now seeking permission from councillors to sell off the land after an approach was made by the energy provider.

Councillors will make a decision at the council’s communities committee next Tuesday.

A report produced for the committee confirms that Scottish Power wants to buy a 40 square metre piece of grassed open space at the roundabout at Craigs Road and St Michael Street in Dumfries. The company would then install an energy networks substation on the site.

A 25 square metres piece of tarmacked land at St Michael’s Street in Dumfries is also being eyed up, along with grassland roughly the same size at Silvercraigs Road, Kirkcudbright.

Scottish Power intends on setting up energy substations at these locations too.

Meanwhile, a resident has approached the council about buying part of disused land in Kirkcudbright.

A report produced for the communities committee states: “The council owns 49.76 acres of land at Low Boreland, Kirkcudbright. The area that is subject to this proposal forms 2010 square metres of rough verge and banking.

“This is an approach from a neighbour looking to extend garden area.

“Members are asked to agree that the council-owned properties/land are declared surplus to the requirements of the communities directorate and can progress through the disposal process.”

If agreed, each site would be sold at market value.
