TEMPERATURES soaring to near 80 degrees brought thousands to the seaside along the Costa Solway Firth this week.

Roads were clogged on Sunday as locals and holidaymakers flocked to the seaside and beach car parks along the Solway, from Southerness to Portpatrick, were overflowing.
The South West’s top beach at Sandyhills on the Colvend coast five miles south of Dalbeattie was packed and cars were abandoned on roadsides as car parks were full for much of the day.

One local shopkeeper said: “It’s been the busiest year along the Solway for a decade at least with two weeks of sunshine at the end of May and so far in June. Many of the caravan sites have been full over the Whit weekend and with schools closed for a holiday in many parts of England, it’s been the busiest I can remember.”
He added: “If we continue with the good weather through the summer it will be big boost for the area. I think many people are wary about going abroad just now.”

Behind the scenes on new Lockerbie drama

A NEW series based on parts of the Lockerbie Disaster is now showing on Sky this week. Featuring Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack, ‘A Search for Truth’ was inspired by the memoirs of Dr Jim Swire, who lost his daughter Flora in the 1988 tragedy. Filming took place in Scotland and Morocco in early 2024 and Annandale Herald editor Fiona Reid went on the set to meet the cast and crew and find out more about it.
