Contributions wanted for harbour museum
PLANS UNVEILED . . . Annan Harbour Action Group chairman Richard Brodie shows off the layout of the newly planned heritage centre. He hopes people will make contributions next week

PEOPLE are being encouraged to share stories, ideas and items for a newly planned visitor centre at Annan Harbour.

Annan Harbour Action Group (AHAG) are inviting members of the public to attend Annan Town Hall at 3 pm next Wednesday, April 30, to contribute to the centre.

The Maritime Heritage project will be housed in the warehouse building, immediately adjacent to the Harbour Quay.

Museum designer Studioarc, who planned the award-winning layout at the Devil’s Porridge Museum in Eastriggs, will also be present to share their initial design based on their research and discussions with the harbour group.

The heritage centre will be part of the multi-million pound redevelopment of the harbour area.

It will pay homage to Annan’s relationship with the Solway and the high seas, the river, the town’s unique haaf netting tradition, and the boat building and seafood industries of Port Street.

Five themes have been identified, including Time and Tide; Changing Tides; Secrets of the River; Voyagers and Adventurers; and Industrious Annan.

Within the themes there is plenty of opportunity for discussion and input from members of the community.

AHAG chairman Richard Brodie said: “We are looking for any ideas which can bring out the history of Annan’s maritime past.

“They could be objects, photographs, film footage and stories from your relatives’ past, going back to when Annan was a boatbuilding hive in the 19th century.

“We have acquired the obvious stuff, national and local records. But we are looking for unique things that we don’t know about.”
