Sad news from town’s gala team
THIS year’s Gretna Gala will be the last, much to the dismay of the community.
The outgoing gala committee made the shock announcement last Friday via social media, stating: “After a lot of thought this past year between the three of us that’s left on the committee, we have come to the decision that this will be our last Gretna Gala.
“This decision for us hasn’t been easy but after giving it our all it’s just too much with the three of us on our own to take any further.
“Eleven rewarding, amazing years we have been on this committee but we feel as though it’s time to close this chapter. We have tried over the years to build a new committee or add to the committee but unfortunately it hasn’t worked out as we hoped.
“Since this is the last year, we would love for you all to support us, get involved in our parade on gala day; big or small paraders you are encouraged to join for our last gala day. Let’s go out with a bang.
“We would like to thank you all for all of the continued support over the last 11 years, it hasn’t gone unnoticed.”
They confirmed gala week will still go ahead as normal with events and some new activities.
The annual event has become a staple of the town’s calendar with the celebrations evolving year after year.
Reacting to the news, several residents took to social media to share their upset. One wrote: “You’ve done a fantastic job, just a shame it’s got to come to an end.”
Another added: “Well done all. Everyone in the committee over the years has put so much time and effort into it all. Such a shame it has to end but you tried hard.”
