Checks on A7 storm damage bridge

EXPERTS have examined a storm-damaged River Esk bridge which carries heavy traffic on the busy A7 through Dumfriesshire.

DAMAGED . . . Skippers Bridge at Langholm

Concerns were raised when stonework came off the upstream side of Skippers Bridge, Langholm at the weekend after it was battered by fast-flowing currents and debris.

Vehicles are still flowing freely on the traffic light-controlled crossing point and Amey, the operators of the trunk road, stated the structure was this week assessed by specialist structural engineers.

A spokeswoman told DnG24 on Thursday: “The engineer is currently making recommendations and will be carrying out a further inspection when water levels go down.”

Meanwhile, Dumfries and Galloway Council are doing checks of bridges across the local authority’s vast network of roads in the wake of Storm Desmond.

A spokesman said: “Public safety is obviously the main priority.”
