MUMS have nominated a cafe in Dumfries for a national breastfeeding award.

The Usual Place in Academy Street has been shortlisted in the Feed With Confidence Awards, organised by Lansinoh to celebrate places and people across the country supporting breastfeeding mums.

One of the nominees said: “Of all the cafes in Dumfries, this is the best for breastfeeding. It’s my first choice when out shopping. Cosy, spacious, comfortable and welcoming.”

Delighted at the nomination, cafe spokeswoman Heather Hall said: “The Usual Place welcomes lots of children and families every day and we couldn’t be more delighted to have received this nomination from our customers. We have a great many mums who breastfeed their babies, we believe that this is because we are warm, welcoming and very inclusive. Whatever way parents chose to feed their babies they are welcome in The Usual Place.”

Meanwhile, new figures show that 60 per cent of babies born in this region last year were initially breastfed. In the 12 months up to March 2017, there were 1240 children born locally and 745 of them were breastfed to begin with. However, by eight weeks old, that number had dropped to 26 per cent being exclusively breastfed, while 33 per cent were mixed fed.
