Boost for bridge work

TWO bridges in Annandale and Eskdale are to receive £124,000 for repairs.

The money for the work on the Wauchope Bridge near Langholm and the Brow Well Bridge at Ruthwell is coming from the Scottish Government’s Local Bridge Maintenance Fund.

Wauchope is located on the B7068 approximately one mile south of Langholm. The masonry arch structure is showing signs of progressive deterioration and requires further investigations to determine the repair options. It has been allocated £64,000.

And the Brow Well Bridge on the B725, pictured above, is getting £60,000 after its masonry arch structure partly collapsed due to scour and foundation failure. A temporary bridge has been installed, but a permanent replacement is required. The replacement structure is partly being funded by the Bridge Structural Maintenance Programme.

Public Finance Minister Tom Arthur said: “I am pleased that this funding will help rebuild or maintain key local bridges where alternatives routes are either not available at all, or involve an unacceptable level of inconvenience if they have to close.

“For some communities bridges provide lifeline links to local needs and necessities, and when they close it can deeply inconvenience residents and disrupt local economies.”
