Birthday beacons

THREE official beacons will be lit in the region tomorrow night (Thurs) to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

The first is on the Solway at Carsethorn and will be set ablaze by deputy lord lieutenant James Blackett at 7.30 pm. There will also be a barbeque and a loyal toast to Her Majesty with local ale.
Another will be lit on a hill above Drumlanrig Castle, on the Buccleuch Estate, near Thornhill. It should be visible for many miles.
And the third will be at Hartbush on the Barr Hill overlooking Amisfield and is being organised by the community. It will start at 8.30 pm and will be lit by well known residents Flora Little and Tom Brown.
At each one, a message of congratulations from the Prince of Wales will be read out.
Beacons have been used for centuries to spread messages or celebrate momentous occasions.
The usual beacons at Caerlaverock and Hoddom and Kinmount estates will not be taking place this time.
