POLICE are urging drivers to be aware of safety around cyclists ahead of a major event in the region this weekend.
A large number of cyclists are expected for the Etape Solway community cycling event which starts at Dalbeattie at 9 am on Sunday, with routes going to Colvend, Sandyhills, Southwick, New Abbey, Milton, Haugh of Urr, Twynholm, and Kirkcudbright.
Inspector Bob McNay said: “With a large number of cyclists of all abilities on our roads this coming weekend, I want to urge everyone to take care.
“I can’t emphasise enough the need to give cyclists the appropriate space and have respect for all other road users. Frustration or lateness are not excuses to risk someone’s safety.”
He stressed The Highway Code states that drivers should allow a passing space of at least 1.5 metres when overtaking a cyclist up to 30 mph, and more at higher speeds. Those who do not can face a fine and penalty points.
Insp McNay added: “Drivers should slow down if they are not able to overtake safely. Please be aware and patient. Check mirrors and blind spots carefully before making a manoeuvre. Hazards on rural roads are not always obvious and cyclists can be hidden round bends.”
Meanwhile, cyclists are advised to make themselves visible and are encouraged to wear fluorescent and reflective clothing and have lights at the front and back.
“Every road user has a responsibility to travel with care and remain alert to others around them. Our rural road network brings its own challenges, with narrow lanes, bends, dips and limited visibility from hedgerows and other features,” added the top cop.
