Castle gardens to open for Easter
Drumlanrig Castle

TODAY (Good Friday) sees coronavirus restrictions relax for the first time this year — and there are few better ways to take advantage of that than by visiting one of the region’s most spectacular estates.

As ‘stay at home’ becomes ‘stay local’, many will be brainstorming how to make the most of the Easter weekend and rediscover their freedom.

It is therefore perfect timing that Drumlanrig Estate’s gardens and adventure playground are due to reopen on Friday (April 2) and will be welcoming local visitors throughout the Easter weekend.

And with sunshine forecast, those looking to step into spring and take advantage of the good weather should look no further than a trip to the picturesque castle near Thornhill.

With climbing nets, slides and a wide range of play equipment, the adventure playground keeps children entertained for hours — and itching to return. Parents can meanwhile relax in the newly-created picnic area, get a bite to eat from the Larchwood Cabin, or go for a stroll around the 40-acre gardens, home to restored Victorian glasshouses, heather houses, and all the usual signs of spring.

Claire Oram, castle manager at Drumlanrig, said: “We are so pleased to be able to re-open for our visitors. We missed the buzz and friendly faces last Easter. We are aware things aren’t back to normal quite yet but opening the gardens and playground is a step in the right direction!

“The safety of all of our visitors and staff is paramount to us, so we are asking people to book in advance, maintain social distancing and we are limiting numbers and will be providing hand sanitisation stations. Drumlanrig might not feel quite the same as before, but the welcome will be just as warm.”

Due to the ongoing social distancing requirements and the delicate nature of Drumlanrig Castle, the castle, tearoom and gift shop will remain closed for the time being.

The wider country estate is also open with free access, so visitors can come and enjoy the walks and mountain bike trails at any time.

The gardens and playground will be open from 11 am – 4 pm Friday to Sunday each weekend in April and June and open selected Mondays for Easter and May bank holidays.

Entry is £6 for adults, £4.50 for concessions and £3.50 for children (under 5s free). Pre-booking online is essential, especially for the adventure playground, and can be done at www.drumlanrigcastle.co.uk.
