323 road casualties sparks MSP warning

MORE needs to be done on the region's roads, says one MSP responding to figures showing there were 323 road casualties locally in 2025.

South of Scotland's Duncan Dunlop has warned that more still needs to be done to upgrade roads like the A75.

He highlighted Transport Scotland's 'Key Reported Road Casualties Scotland 2025' figures, which show that in 2025, Dumfries and Galloway recorded 323 casualties; and the number killed on Scotland’s roads fell from 160 in 2024 to 134 in 2025.

The publication notes that last year's numbers are: “not on track to meet the framework target for 2030” of reducing fatalities by 50 per cent compared to 2014-18. Nor to meet the 2030 targets for a 50 per cent cut in those seriously injured and a 60 per cent drop in children seriously injured.

Mr Dunlop said: “There are still far too many casualties on roads across Dumfries and Galloway.

“I don’t want to see any more families left without loved ones because the Scottish Government continues to drag its heels when it comes to tackling dangerous trunk roads.

“Local communities and road safety communities are clear that roads like the A75 are long overdue for improvements.

“These upgrades would offer an economic boost too.

“The new Transport Secretary needs to get serious about improving road safety across the South of Scotland.”
