Rugby pitch wrecked

POLICE are hunting vandals who trashed a rugby pitch at Castle Douglas by driving a car round it.

The Stewartry Rugby Club’s second team pitch has been churned up as a car was driven round and round.

They believe ‘boy racers’ could be to blame  for the extensive damage to the playing surface, but police say their investigation into the incident is continuing.

It is believed the car was driven into Greenlaw complex sometime on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Club spokesman John Low said: “We don’t know the exact time but it was after the under 18s game on Saturday afternoon and we discovered it on Sunday.

“It’s a terrible mess and the wheels have churned up the grass leaving huge wheel marks all over the pitch.”

He added: “We just can’t think why someone would want to do this to the pitch. It’s absolutely senseless.

“We have games this weekend but the pitch is not playable and we will have to see what we can do with it.

“There’s no growth at this time of the year so it’s all very sickening.”
