DELIGHT has been expressed at a unanimous decision to give the go-ahead to the Star of Caledonia border statue.

All the councillors on the region’s planning committee were in agreement to back the ‘cultural beacon’ at their meeting on Wednesday.

It means the multi-million project is now on track to start construction next year, with an expected finish date of 2027.

After the decision, Lucy Houston, from the Gretna Green Group, posted a message expressing her delight and thanking supporters. She said: “I can’t thank you all enough for your support and encouragement. Together we will build something to celebrate our community and region.

“Next stage is to finalise the funding - and we will start building on site in spring next year with a 14 month build. It’s all go!”

The 40 metre high Star is expected to become a major tourist attraction, akin to the Angel of the North.
