Spend your time wisely
A NEW way for people in Upper Annandale to help each other without needing money has been launched.
The timebank will allow for the sharing of skills, swapping of time and exchanging of goods.
Participants are encouraged to offer practical help, creative skills, spare produce, or useful items no longer needed.
In return, they can ask for support with something that would otherwise feel expensive, difficult, or just not much fun to do alone.
The organisers of the new Upper Annandale Timebank say: “It’s about neighbours helping neighbours — in ways that work for everyone.
“It’s based on a simple idea: everyone’s time has value, and we can support each other by sharing what we already know and do.
“No money changes hands — just time. In a world where things can feel very expensive, stretched and a bit disconnected, this is a small, practical way of doing things differently, locally.”
Everyone’s time is valued equally and putting in one hour of time will earn you one credit for the timebank.
It is being set up by the Make/Change Collective in Moffat and they are helping people to understand how it all works.
Outlining what can be shared, founder Jane Gray said: “Gardening, lifts, DIY, tech help, baking, mending, admin support, event help, companionship — as well as surplus produce, seeds, plants and other useful items.
“If it’s safe and legal, it probably belongs in the Timebank.
“Often the most ordinary skills — or things we don’t even think of as skills, like walking a dog or being a shopping buddy — turn out to be the most valuable.”
“The Timebank helps us to: build connection, reduce isolation, value everyday skills, keep resources circulating locally, make asking for help normal. It’s a practical way of strengthening community — one small exchange at a time.”
It’s open to individuals who live or work locally, as well as families, small businesses, community groups and organisations across the area.
Applications will also be welcomed from people outside the area who can offer, or need, virtual skills and goods.
