LAST week was extremely successful for Santa and his helpers, as they visited streets around Annan, to collect food donations for those in need over this festive period. The team behind the town’s Riding of the Marches’ Raft Race had come up with the idea for a ‘Feed The Need Appeal’ a few months ago. Santa and his helpers would embark on a sleigh tour around the town with a twist. Instead of handing out gifts, they would gather food items which would then be distributed to groups in the community. David Bell, AROM Raft Race convenor, said: “From an idea that popped into our heads a few months back, to what we all completed last week was better than we could have expected. “The generosity from our townspeople has blown our team of volunteers away, as can be seen in the photo. “It will help so many local people in need over what can be a difficult time. “Our team braved the weather, whilst putting smiles on faces, especially the children’s, around the town – from us all, a huge thank you for the donations!” Stuart Thompson MBE, joint chair Annan Riding of the Marches, added: “An enormous thank you to the donors in our community, for the food and donations collected, by Father Xmas and the Riding of the Marches, Raft Race Committee. “The unfavourable weather conditions did disrupt plans. (But), the generosity of Annan Townspeople again, clearly demonstrated our close knit community spirit, by donating and demonstrating such kindness. “These kind gestures, will provide help and comfort, ensuring that all can celebrate comfortably, throughout our Festive periods. Thanks so much to all who donated and supported the Riding of the Marches initiative.” The team would like to pay special thanks to the volunteers that turned out, Carrs Billington for their ongoing support, Leeann’s Tropical Tanning for being a collection point and to the people of Annan who gave so generously this Christmas. They would also like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.
