CAR parking issues persist on the roads outside Newington Primary School at pick-up and drop-off times. The problem was brought up at this week’s meeting of Annan Community Council. Issues include cars being parked on yellow lines and driveways being blocked. For two short periods, before 9 am and around 3 pm, the area surrounding the school becomes congested with vehicles. And there are concerns over the safety of children, parents and staff out on foot, with several near misses having been reported in recent times. Community councillor Alan Kay gave an idea to try and combat the issue. He said: “We’ve said previously, there’s that much ground within the school grounds that a parking area could be easily achieved. “Even if it was just a turning circle where they drive in, drop the children off and drive out again.” Cllr George Jamieson said he would discuss the issue with the council. He added: “Part-time traffic wardens for the region have been held up, but they are coming back. “I would like to think they will go to places where there are problems. “This issue causes irritation and it could cause someone to get hurt as well.” Dumfries and Galloway Council said on street parking was the responsibility of Police Scotland. It is understood the school has previously sent out correspondence to parents and guardians, while the police have been made aware of the issue.
