Rowers faced testing time in loch race

INTREPID teams of rowers took to Loch Ryan’s waters on Saturday for ‘The Long Ryan’ races.

Crews from Stranraer, Wigtown, Annan and Troon took part in the event, which began with a dramatic Le Mans-style start that saw crew members racing across the beach to their boats before setting off on the course.

Challenging conditions saw a drop in visibility and the route was modified from the planned full journey around the coastline of the loch. Crews rowed just over four miles to Wig Bay, collected their tokens, and then returned to Stranraer.

Despite the worsening weather, the team from Troon emerged victorious in the coastal rowing and sailing race.

Commenting on the success of the event, Kevin Packer, trustee of Stranraer Water Sports Association and organiser of the event, said:

“The Long Ryan turned out to be more challenging than expected due to deteriorating visibility and breezy, wavy conditions that weren’t in the forecast. Without clear landmarks visible on land, crews faced the additional challenge of navigation, making this a true test of their all-round rowing skills.

“As a safety-conscious organisation, we adjusted the route accordingly, and I’m pleased to say that despite the challenging conditions, everyone enjoyed the event. The Troon crew demonstrated exceptional skill to take the win. We’re already looking forward to next year’s race, hopefully with better weather on our side.”
