FOOTBALL fans who are caught using pyrotechnics at matches will potentially face a banning order.

It comes after a tiny section of the Queen of the South support let off pyro during the side’s 2-1 victory over Kelty Hearts at Palmerston Park last weekend.

The Dumfries club have previously warned supporters not to use the devices. It is a criminal offence to take or try to take a pyrotechnic into football matches, and they also pose safety risks.

But after another incident, Queen of the South officials were forced to put out a further plea.

Their statement read: “We are again disheartened by the decision taken by individuals to set off pyrotechnics at our game against Kelty Hearts on Saturday.

“This is not only a breach of the SPFL/SFA regulations, it is more seriously a breach of the Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles (Scotland) Act 2022.

“The club condemns unacceptable behaviour and in particular any use of pyrotechnics at either home or away matches and we will endeavour to cut out what is both an illegal and extremely dangerous act which apart from the potential for burn injuries can be life-threatening if done near persons with respiratory conditions.

“As this is a criminal act, details of offenders will also be passed to the police which may result in a football banning order up to ten years and a criminal record for the offender as well as a possible fine of up to £5000 and up to six months imprisonment.” The Dumfries outfit stressed that the large majority of punters represent the club “impeccably” but “mindless” acts of a few “lets everyone down”.

The statement added: “We want everyone to come along to the games and support the team but ask that everyone creates a positive atmosphere without endangering the safety of other fans and staff or causing any potential penalties for the club.

“We aim to be fair with all our supporters and all we ask is for fairness in return, so let us work together to ensure that supporting Queens remains a safe and enjoyable experience for all.”
