VOLUNTEERS within NHS Dumfries and Galloway have been celebrated this week after contributing over 16,000 over the last 12 months.

As part of National Volunteers’ Week the health board has shone a spotlight on 160 volunteers who have given up their time across hospital and community settings throughout the region.
Bosses have been out and about to meet and thank them personally for what they do.
The volunteers have also been celebrating with events including a quiz night and other informal gatherings.
Jane Martin, volunteer coordinator at NHS Dumfries and Galloway, said: “This is a very busy time for volunteering across NHS Dumfries and Galloway, and an incredibly exciting one too. We are rebuilding, growing and reenergising our volunteer service, welcoming new volunteers into key roles while strengthening the support we offer to those already giving their time.
“Our NHS volunteers, and those from partner organisations and charities, play a vital part in supporting patients, staff and communities. It is a privilege to work alongside them as we shape the future of volunteering at NHS Dumfries and Galloway.”
A number of volunteer-led organisations are also being recognised for their contribution,s including The League of Friends, Marie Curie, DG Blood Bikes, Therapet and DG Carers Hub.
Lorna Darrie, director of allied health professions at NHS Dumfries and Galloway and the organisation’s lead for its volunteer service, added: “It has long since been the motto that volunteering is at the heart of our NHS, and that does not seem to change. Even with increased pressures and demands on service delivery and provision, these remarkable people continue to take up volunteer roles year after year to help us.”
