QUEEN of the South fans can breathe a huge sigh of relief. It comes after defender Mikey Hewitt looked to have seriously injured himself in the final stages of the Doonhamers’ 3-1 victory over Clyde on Tuesday night. The right-back went into a meaty 50-50 challenge and came off worse. He remained on the floor, screaming in pain as the Queens physios stormed onto the pitch. With Queens having a small squad and with two key players — Brennan Dickenson and Jordan Allan — out injured, another casualty would’ve been problematic. However, Hewitt was able to limp off the park and QoS no2 Colin McMenamin reassured supporters that Hewitt is all good and should be able to feature in the league against Kelty Hearts this weekend. He also gave good news about midfielder Benji Luissint who could be back on Saturday. McMenamin said: “Mikey should be fine, we took him off as a precaution but he should be okay. “He went into a tackle that he probably shouldn’t have. He had a good night and game, so he probably wanted to keep going. “I think he was sold slightly short by a Reece Lyon pass and it was a 50-50 challenge but he’ll be okay for the weekend. “We’ve had a few injuries with these cup games in the past. We tried to protect players with a lot of changes against East Kilbride but with losing that one it was important we got a victory tonight. And thankfully we’ve come through that unscathed and hopefully will have Benji back for Saturday.” Queens were impressive for the majority of the Challenge Cup contest against Clyde. Kurtis Guthrie notched a double <\h><\h>— his sixth goal in nine games since signing for the Dumfries outfit, whilst Taylor Charters netted a third late on to see the Doonhamers leap up to 13th in the group standings. Also, on-loan Killie winger Cole Burke made his full-debut for the club and caught the eye of many of the 456 inside Palmerston. McMenamin added: “Big Kurtis scored two goals but he knows he probably should’ve had more. He was a handful all night and showed a different side of his game with running in behind. He was excellent but we took him off at the end to save his legs, we need to look after him. He’s in the 30s club so we need to make sure he’s rested well. “We knew what we were getting with Kurtis, he’s a big lad who scores goals. He’s got six already and hopefully many more to come. “With Jordan Allan to come back in as well, it gives us a couple of good options. “Cole did well. We spoke to Kilmarnock yesterday and Stuart Kettlewell was good enough to let us have Cole play in this cup. “He was a real livewire, had a couple of good chances and produced a few brilliant crosses. “He tired near the end but it’s a big welcome to men’s football. He’s very young and just turned 17. I’m glad to see him do well.” And on the Kelty tie, McMenamin said: “Kelty are a good team and will cause us problems but we’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and search for another three points.”
