Turf was dug up and ramps were made for motorbikes at the Motte and Bailey site next to Bruce Street.

It is an offence to cause damage to a scheduled monument and the incident has been reported to the police.

Annan the History Town have been left disappointed after being sent pictures of the damage at the location of historical significance.

The site had been tidied up somewhat when members of the group paid a visit on Wednesday morning, however, tyre tracks remained visible.

History Town chairman Richard Brodie said: “The group is deeply saddened by the latest act of vandalism at the Motte and Bailey which is such an important part of Annan’s heritage.

“We are keen to send a message to those responsible to make them aware how serious it is to deface a scheduled monument.

“They probably think it was a bit of fun but it is fun which will land them in serious trouble with the law.

“Damaging the site of Annan’s historic castle may not be in the same league as chopping down the Sycamore Gap tree, but the integrity of the Motte and Bailey is extremely important to our ancient Royal Burgh.

“Apparently the perpetrators were using the site as a motorbike track. “It may be that people living near the site or passing by may have heard what was going on. Please contact the police if you have information and report any future suspicious activity by phoning 101.”

The Motte and Bailey comprises the remains of a castle built in the 12th century by the Bruce family.

It played a significant role on the control of the Scottish-English border.

ATHT Group have plans to erect signs at and around the site to give detail of its importance.

The group also hope that at some point in the future there could be an excavation in the area.
