Liverpool Legends match rekindles musical magic
AN unforgettable afternoon at the recent Liverpool FC Foundation Charity match between Liverpool Legends and Borussia Dortmund Legends delivered more than just football nostalgia.
It sparked a heartfelt reunion between past and present for Gretna musical duo Pam and Phil Bayne – aka The Runaways.
The match, held in support of the Liverpool FC Foundation, and played at Anfield, raised significant funds for community initiatives, while treating a 60,000 strong crowd to a truly special surprise.
At half time fans were delighted by the stirring sounds of ‘Liverpool You Know We Love You’, a song written in 1980 by Reds fans Phil and Pam.
Originally released on their independent label Anvil Records, it was backed by the popular Mickey Potts Carlisle Jazz band and recorded by the late Jim Henshaw.
At that time in the 1980s the single record sold very well when The Runaways made an appearance in both Liverpool and Carlisle stores.
The song, which was written by the duo, seemed to capture the spirit and passion of Liverpool supporters everywhere.
Its success lead to memorable encounters with club icons, including the great Bob Paisley, Terry McDermott, Ray Clemence and Phil Neal
Fast forward to March 2026 and the couple were overwhelmed with emotion as their song echoed once again, this time across a packed stadium.
Friends attending the match even called them in real time so they could share in the moment.
Phil and Pam, who have been married for 58 years and continue to sing and record new music, said: “We wrote the song purely for the love of Liverpool.

“To hear that it was played to such an incredible crowd and received so warmly means the world to us.
“Liverpool FC will always have a special place in our hearts.”
Pam and Phil’s musical journey has long been rooted in the community. They have always been popular throughout Dumfries and Galloway and Cumbria, while they have performed at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including the London Palladium, and Wembley Country Music Festival.
They added: “This remarkable full circle moment is a testament to the enduring power of the music community and football, bringing generations together in celebration of a shared love of Liverpool FC.
“It was truly a moment that we will never forget.”
