Lack of disabled park equipment in town

PARENTS and residents have voiced strong frustration over the persistent lack of disabled play apparatus in Lochmaben’s parks.
And they pointed out that promised upgrades have stalled for years despite being labelled an “urgent” priority.
During the latest Lochmaben Community Council (LCC) meeting, two members of the public highlighted the severe lack of inclusive play equipment.
They noted that two years ago, councillor Stephen Thompson was featured in a newspaper article declaring the installation of disabled apparatus a matter of urgency.
Despite this, local parks remain largely inaccessible to children with additional support needs.
Outgoing chairman Kenelma McCrae explained that when she previously investigated the issue, she discovered the local authority uses its own contracted companies for park developments.
Past discussions with the council ultimately led nowhere, leaving the community council frustrated.
However, the LCC assured residents they intend to raise the matter with the council once again.
Members of the public also debated alternative routes to secure inclusive equipment. One proposal involved approaching private housing developers who have recently built estates in the area to see if they can provide community support or funding.
Residents highlighted Robson Park as a prime target, noting it should be due a dedicated play area.
The community council will look into whether developers can be engaged directly to ensure inclusive apparatus is built into the park’s design from the outset.
