Keep out of town wood warning
RESIDENTS in Moffat are being advised to stay away from the Tank Wood over safety fears.
Dumfries and Galloway Council is installing safety signage at key access points to advise people not to enter the area due to potential risks.
Annandale North Cllr Stephen Thompson said the move is for public information and as a precautionary measure, adding: “While signage may not prevent all access, it ensures the council meets its duty to highlight known hazards.”
Meanwhile, a specialist survey is taking place of the woodland to assess how healthy it is.
Offering an update, Councillor Thompson said: “Emergency tree works and general maintenance are needed to support the woodland’s health.
“Initially, the council explored using the site for on-site chainsaw training with a recognised provider, but it was determined that the woodland does not offer the necessary conditions to support this.
“Specialist tree contractors are concluding a full survey of the woods, identifying any trees requiring emergency attention and assessing the overall health of the woodland. You may see marked trees as part of their assessment.”
A report with their feedback and guidance will be presented to the Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee, setting out the options for future management and works.
Cllr Thompson added: “Any emergency tree works identified will be carried out promptly in the meantime to ensure public safety.”
Tank Wood is Common Good land but the local authority has a duty to ensure its safe management.
