Hydrogen production plans submitted
A FULL planning application has been lodged for a green hydrogen production facility at Chapelcross.
Creca Hydrogen Ltd, founded by Green Cat Hydrogen, want to construct a 50 MWe electrolyser facility and associated ancillary infrastructure on land adjacent to the former Chapelcross Nuclear facility, the old runway site.
They hope the proposed development will contribute towards the Scottish Government’s renewable energy targets.
And the energy produced at the site will be used to decarbonise local industries within Dumfries and Galloway
The facility, which the applicant hopes to complete by 2028, will produce electrolytic hydrogen, which entails the electrochemical splitting of water into molecular hydrogen, with oxygen as a by-product. The oxygen produced will then be released to the atmosphere.
Once purified, the hydrogen is compressed into tube trailers that will then be distributed to a range of buyers within a 30 mile radius. These will include food and drink, manufacturing and healthcare businesses.
It is estimated the hydrogen site will create 47 direct jobs and 36 indirect jobs during the operational phase.
Other infrastructure at the site will include compressor and generator areas; hydrogen storage and drying areas; water treatment; SUDS pond; hardstandings; tube trailer filling points; offices, control rooms and welfare areas; and workshops, labs and stores.
