A HARDY group of volunteers, veterans and service people made their through Annandale this week as part of a charity trek to Land’s End.

The group is making the 1000 km journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End pulling a one tonne field gun and carriage to raise funds for the Military Vs Cancer charity.

Dedicated to helping armed forces personnel and their families through cancer, the charity provides emotional, mental, and financial aid, whenever and wherever it’s needed and is staffed by ex-service people.

The gun the group are pulling was used in South Africa during the Second Boer War during the Siege of Ladysmith which lasted for four months.

Their journey south began on September 1, arriving into Moffat last Friday, camping at the rugby club over weekend before continuing their journey south on Monday.

On Tuesday the group called in at Gretna Green’s famous Blacksmith’s Shop where volunteers joined them as they crossed the border into England.

So far the fundraiser is sitting at £20,006, with a £150,000 target.

They are due to reach Land’s End on Thursday October 16.
