Five cases of domestic abuse reported each day

POLICE in the region record more than five incidents of domestic abuse every day in Dumfries and Galloway.
The staggering figures are revealed in a new report for councillors.
It also notes there were 1869 domestic abuse incidents logged locally in the year from April 2025 to March 2026.
That’s an 24 per cent increase, or 366 more incidents, on the five-year average.
And it is the highest annual total in the police figures presented and continues a clear upward trend, rising from 1740 the previous year.
Police believe part of the increase may also a greater confidence among people in coming forward. Last year, the region’s then police commander, Chief Superintendent Steven Meikle, said more neighbours, friends and relatives of victims were stepping forward to report incidents.
