DISCUSSIONS to save a vital bus route in Annan are at an “advanced stage”. Last month it was revealed that the Stagecoach operated Annan Town Service bus would be withdrawn from January 5. But after many local concerns, an update was posted by Dumfries and Galloway Council. It read: “Please note that SWestrans is actively working to maintain this community service. “Discussions are at an advanced stage with Annandale Community Transport Services on a potential replacement service. “School children that currently travel on the 579 from Gretna to Annan will be reallocated to alternative transport services and their parents will be contacted in due course. “Thank you for your patience while we work to keep the community connected.” The issue was also raised by the town’s community council at their meeting on Monday, when they were told by ward officer Jaime Nicholson that there would be a “reduced” service. Community councillor John Ramage had asked if it was possible for whoever takes over the bus service to pick up residents at Tesco as they do at Lockerbie. The suggestion will be put forward by Mrs Nicholson.
