With 60,000 poppy seeds in his possession, community councillor Jim Ferguson was racking his brains as to what to do with them. Then he had an idea – a poppy pathway.
Jim said: “I fundraise for poppy Scotland and they gave me 500 packs of poppy seeds.
“I have been trying for a year to put them somewhere. All of a sudden this came up – the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
“I spoke to Allan Weild and he said – why don’t you put them at the pillars at the entrance to Annan?
“They are wild flowers and they will come up every year as a memorial, they come up from June to August.”
Jim spoke to Annandale South ward officer Jaime Nicholson and she organised the cutting of grass ready for the planting of the seeds yesterday just before the entrance to Annan, along the B721 at the other side of Annan Bridge.
Jim also told of his desire to one day create a poppy path right across the region. He added: “I have put that idea to Jaime, I can supply the seeds. Every entrance to a town has a sign up with grass next to it.
“Dumfries and Galloway could have a poppy pathway from one end to the other. From Gretna Green to Portpatrick.”
Jim was joined by fellow community councillors, Dumfries and Galloway armed forces champion cllr Archie Dryburgh, Jaime Nicholson and deputy lord lieutenant Hardip Atwal.
