WE are less than a week away from the first rideout, and the start of Annan Riding of the Marches 2026! On Wednesday May 27 the sound of horses’ hooves will fill the town as Cornet John Crowther, Cornet’s Lass Holly Ker and Standard Bearer Kirstie Butler lead the cavalcade out for the Dornock Rideout, sponsored by Carr’s Billington. There will be a healthy mix of excitement and nerves among the year’s new principals, so why not come out and support them? Both cheering along on foot and joining the ride on horseback are always welcome, just remember that if you are going to ride you must fill out a safety brief; this is available on our Facebook page along with the rideout routes. The team behind the official programme have been working very hard all year, but it has all paid off as the magazine is at the printer as we speak. It’s your guide for all the events in the lead up to the big day on Saturday July 4, as well as a collection of stories and photos from past and present. Keep an eye out for it soon at businesses around the town. People are already planning their fancy dress parade entries, could you help make the 80th anniversary parade something to remember? Whether in a group, individual, on foot, with a float or even with a classic vehicle, all welcome to try and win a share of the £1500 prize fund spread across four categories! Further information on our website at www.annanrom.co.uk. The pet show is also making a comeback, on Sunday June 21! Fun classes include senior dog, fancy dress, homemade pet and many more. Come along to Breconbeds Equestrian Centre at 10 am for a day of fun with your furry friends. We have some new events planned this year especially for the 80th anniversary of the Marches, including an amateur photography competition. Thanks to Cunninghame Housing Association, there are prizes across three categories: most humorous; horse and rider; and pipe bands. So, get snap happy and you could be in with a chance! Either post your photos to Facebook with the hashtag #arom80 or send your entries to [email protected] before July 25. To make this year extra special we are looking to paint the town blue and yellow in the run up to the big day! If you are a former Cornet, Cornet’s Lass, Standard Bearer or Queen of the Border we would love to help you celebrate with us. Send your name, role and year of office to [email protected] and we will send you bunting and a garden sign to kick start your home decorations! Let us know by May 31. It’s the start of a busy year of fun and celebration, so keep an eye out across our socials and here to stay in the loop. Marchrider
