Action taken to improve pump track safety
SAFETY concerns surrounding Moffat’s new pump track are being taken seriously, with new measures being put in place.
Residents raised the alarm last week about the safety of young people leaving the new track at Hope Johnstone Park on to the nearby A701, due to the speed of wagons coming into the town.
Similar concerns were raised back in 2024 and brought to the attention of councillors and officers before the pump track was approved.
Offering reassurance to residents, a spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council has now said: “We’re aware of concerns raised about access to the new pump track in Moffat and are taking steps to improve safety. Temporary signage has been installed on Edinburgh Road, and permanent signs warning of children playing are being arranged.
“Following a site review on 23 July, we’re repositioning the gate and adding fencing to prevent pedestrian and cyclist access at the current vehicular entrance. These works are being prioritised.
“We’re also working with local partners to promote road safety messages and encourage parents to discuss safe travel routes with their children.”
They added: “The pump track has been a hugely positive addition for Moffat, and we’re committed to ensuring it remains safe and accessible for all.”
