MyFresh, which has a site in Empire Way, has entered a 30-day employee consultation period concerning the future of the factory, which processes most of the company’s potatoes, carrots and swede.
And managing director Nick Gale this week confirmed the view is to close the Gretna operation.
He said: “The decision to propose the process of closing the site has not been taken lightly and is not a reflection of the performance on our colleagues in Gretna.
“Sadly the continuing decline in sales and the accelerated reduction in chilled food manufactured in Southern Scotland and in Northern England means the operation here has become economically unviable.”
He added: “The potential closure would result in the loss of up to 60 jobs and we are working closely with our colleagues at Gretna as we appreciate the difficult situation this causes them.
“We will of course continue to communicate with our colleagues, suppliers and customers once we are in a position to share further information.”
