Strong start to season for Marchmount
SEASON OPENING . . . Aileen Carson delivered the first jack of the season, with president Alan Glendinning watching on

THE outdoor season is now underway at the Marchmount Bowling Club.

On opening day, April 18, the weather was not favourable, however, club president Alan Glendinning, welcomed guests from neighbouring clubs, members and invited Aileen Carson to deliver the first jack and bowls of the season before retiring to the clubhouse for a buffet and refreshments.

The established annual Try Bowls recruitment drive started just over a week later, with a hugely successful morning, recruiting 17 new bowlers to the club.

The club’s reached a grand total of 30 new members this season so far and those who would like to try their hand at bowling will be welcomed along.

With a vast improvement in the weather, the weekly sweeps have proven very popular with a full green most Friday evenings, while the midweek events have also drawn in great numbers.

For the first time in a number of years the club has joined forces with Georgetown Primary School, delivering five sessions to P5 pupils to introduce them to bowls.

Last Sunday, May 11, was the first open tournament of the season – the annual Aussie Pairs, kindly sponsored by Mowercare Garden Machinery Services.

A full entry of 24 pairs played in a round robin format of three games of eight ends, in six groups with the winners of each group qualifying and two highest runners up.

The quarter final draw saw Billy Haining and Stuart Forsyth, Marchmount, play Dave Temple and Alan Telfer, Maxwelltown; Colin and Kate Peacock, play Bobby and Mary Jess; Gordon Haining and Duncan Smith met Ryan Prince and Jackie Walker, Whitehaven; and Keith Shuttleworth and Christine Tennent, New Abbey play Bruce Robison and Ian Cronie, from the host club.

The semi-finals were Colin Peacock v Dave Temple and Gordon Haining v Bruce Robison.

And winners on the day were Colin and Kate Peacock, with the runners up being Gordon Haining and Duncan Smith.

Thanks are expressed to everyone who entered and those who came in to spectate.
