Ready to mark VE Day
SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY . . . Heather Kirk and Niki Armstrong are all set to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day at ‘Our Wee Pop Up Shop’

EVENTS will be held across Annandale and Eskdale next week to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

Throughout the month of May The Wee Pop Up Shop, located at the side of Cafe Royal, is celebrating the special anniversary in conjunction with Annan Art Group and Annan Museum.

There will be a display of items from Annan Museum and an exhibition from Annan Art Club, with paintings for sale, while children can stay entertained with arts and crafts.

And on Saturday May 10 the shop is hosting a street party with games, stalls, old music and party food.

Over in Gretna at the Borders Hub CIC – The Chapel – on Glasgow Road there will be a VE Day Celebration on Sunday May 11.

Events will include a jumble sale, pot a poppy, flags, cakes, mural designing and crafting. People are encouraged to wear old clothes and bring paint brushes.

Springfield and Gretna Green will commemorate VE Day on Thursday May 8 at Stormont Hall at 8 pm with an hour of 1940s music, followed by the lighting of the beacon of peace.

Gretna Day Centre are celebrating by dressing up in old clothing, from 10 am to 1 pm, also on Thursday.

Eastriggs Community Group and the Devil’s Porridge Museum have organised a special scarecrow competition.

Next weekend the village museum will welcome living history re-enactors The Time Bandits to mark the occasion.

A number of commemorative events are also scheduled to take place on VE day itself, Thursday May 8.

There will be short service at Annan War Memorial at 10.45 am and The Devil’s Porridge, Eastriggs, at 9.30 am.

In Langholm, to commemorate the 80th anniversary, and to remember the brave men and women who gave their lives during WWII, there will be a small wreath laying service at the war memorial at 6.30 pm. There will also be a reading of the names on the Langholm roll of honour for WW2.
