Sisters set to hit the stage

HEAVENLY music will echo through the Theatre Royal next month when Dumfries Musical Theatre Company take to the stage in the feel-good musical comedy, Sister Act.

Based on the 1992 smash hit film of the same name, Sister Act follows wise-cracking nightclub singer, Deloris van Cartier, portrayed by Erin Watt, as she is placed in protective custody in a convent after witnessing a murder committed by her gangster boyfriend, Curtis Jackson played by Roy Stairmand.

Disguised as a nun, Deloris finds herself at odds with stern Mother Superior portrayed by Joyce Reekie and develops an unlikely friendship with the gaggle of characterful nuns.

There’s young and shy Sister Mary Robert played by Star Murdy, Lauren Grantham in the role of joyful Sister Mary Patrick alongside Sharron Harper as eccentric choir mistress, Sister Mary Lazarus.

In the convent, Deloris reluctantly helps revitalise the tuneless choir with her singing talent, and discovers a sense of community and sisterhood.

Director Stewart Cameron cannot wait to share the show with audiences in May, saying: “Prepare for heavenly laughter and soulful melodies in Sister Act, the divine musical comedy that will make you dance in the aisles. Follow Deloris van Cartier, a sassy singer hidden in a convent after witnessing a crime.

With her flair, she transforms dull choir performances into soulful gospel showcases. As danger looms, Sister Act celebrates laughter, love and inspiration. Deloris finds sisterhood, faith, and her voice.

From gospel melodies to dramatic encounters, experience the magic of Sister Act’s music, friendship and self-discovery.”

Stewart is supported by musical director Christopher Watt and choreography from Georgie Swale and Star Murdy who, along with the vibrant chorus of nuns, will have you clapping, singing and dancing along.

Sister Act will be performed at Theatre Royal from Saturday May 10 to Saturday May 17 from 7.30 pm, with one matinée on Sunday 11 May at 2.30 pm.
