Parade role for drummer

A DRUMMER in the Queen’s funeral procession has spoken of his honour at taking part.

Sergeant Zak Norman, from Lockerbie, is an aircraft engineer with the Royal Air Force and on Monday was part of the military musical effort at the State funeral.

He said: “On this occasion my role was a drummer with the Royal Air Force pipes and drums. We were part of the massed pipes and drums. Our main part in the procession was to take Her Majesty from Westminster Hall to Westminster Abbey leading the gun carriage.”

He was in rehearsals all last week to prepare, including one day in London.

Revealing more about the day itself, Zak said they played slow airs, as well a Mist Covered Mountains and Mull of the Mountain for the slow march.

And he added: “It felt an honour to do it. In my entire airforce career it’s at the top. It still hasn’t completely sunk in.”
