£2.6m pricetag for corona cleaning

KEEPING the region’s schools clean admist the covid pandemic is set to cost £2.6 million in total this academic year.

And if the extra cleaning measures are required to be continued next year, it is estimated that will require another £1.2 million up to April 2022.

Councillors will discuss the matter at next week’s education committee and a report for that meeting sets out the costs of the PPE, additional bins, extra cleaning products, mobile cleaning teams and daytime cleaning staff.

Dumfries and Galloway Council manager Susan Martin said: “It should be noted that as yet there is no Government guidance for requirements into the new school session in 2021/22, but it is likely that the enhanced cleaning regime currently in place and proving effective will be required at least part way into the school session, and that ventilation/energy costs will continue to be required.

“This remains under review pending further guidance but is in line with the approach being taken by other local authorities.

The breakdown of the projected costs for the additional cleaning to remain in place in the current model and for the current costs for PPE and cleaning materials to remain consistent have been calculated. This includes the extension of contracts for temporary staff which are due to end in June 2021.

“Final decision on planning will be subject to the receipt of further Government guidance.”
