KIND hearted people across Dumfries and Galloway have donated more than 2000 meals for dogs in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
Following an appeal by Lost Dogs Dumfries and Galloway, dog food and treats are now being distributed among community groups and to those who need a helping hand. Those benefiting include people who are struggling financially or are unwell, shielding or self-isolating.
Among the donations was a huge pallet of 50 large bags of dog food from Skinner’s Pet Foods. The large bags will be split up into smaller portions and distributed across the region. Pete Hannah from Skinners said: “It’s a pleasure for us to offer help to people in a time of need – lockdown has really helped us all refocus what is on our doorstep, the good and the bad. I’d like to thank everyone who has made this possible in Dumfries and Galloway and who are trying to make a difference.”
In addition, the Dumfries branch of Pets at Home, through the store’s charity Support Adoption for Pets, has also pledged a large pallet of pet items, mainly food.
The online appeal was launched on May 14 and saw more than 1500 dog meals donated in less than 72 hours. The rest have been arriving over the last few weeks.
Donations of dog food are also being distributed through a local housing association, Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership. Food parcels are being issued to customers of DGHP, part of Wheatley Group, through the EatWell programme. One of the community groups to benefit from the donations is Lochside Community Association, who distribute food and lunches to their local community.
